If you're searching for somewhere your teenager can train around Strathpine, Lawnton, Kallangur, Petrie, Bray Park, Warner or North Lakes, you've probably already discovered the problem: almost everything out there is built for adults, with teens as an afterthought.
Big-box gyms will sell a 14-year-old a membership, point them at the machines and wish them luck. Some PTs will take teen clients between their adult sessions. A few footy and netball clubs run preseason fitness. None of it is quite the same thing as a program actually built for teenagers.
I run one of those programs, so I'm not pretending to be neutral here. But these are the questions I'd ask any gym — including mine — before handing them my kid. Take this list with you; the answers separate the good options from the rest very quickly.
1. "Who exactly will be coaching my teen — and what are their qualifications?"
Not the head trainer who runs the business. The actual human on the floor with your child at 4pm on a Tuesday. You're looking for a qualified strength & conditioning coach with real experience coaching adolescents — not a casual instructor whose youth experience is having once been young.
Teens aren't small adults. They're growing, their tendons and growth plates are still developing, and they respond to coaching completely differently. The person coaching them should know all of that cold.
2. "Is every session supervised, or does my teen train alone?"
This is the dividing line between a teen program and a gym membership. A 15-year-old with a program on their phone and nobody watching their squat is how bad technique gets grooved in — and how parents end up at the physio. Every set your teen does should happen within sight of a coach who'll step in and fix things.
3. "How many teens per coach?"
"Supervised" can mean a coach watching six kids or a coach nominally in charge of thirty. Neither extreme is ideal — huge groups mean no real coaching, but one-on-one training misses the thing that actually keeps teens showing up: other teens. The sweet spot is a small group, big enough for energy and mateship, small enough that nobody's technique goes unwatched.
4. "Will my teen get their own program, or do the same workout as everyone else?"
A 13-year-old netballer who's never touched a barbell and a 17-year-old rugby forward should not be doing the same session. Ask how the program is personalised: Is there an assessment when they start? Is the program built around their sport and their level? Is it progressed as they improve, and re-tested on a schedule so you can see the progress in numbers?
If the answer is "everyone does the workout of the day", keep looking.
5. "Can I stay and watch?"
The answer should be an immediate, unbothered yes. Any program working with minors should be completely comfortable with parents watching from the side — first session or fiftieth. Treat hesitation on this one as disqualifying.
6. "What happens if my teen hates it?"
You're listening for two things: whether there's a free or low-cost way to try before committing, and what the exit looks like if it's not a fit. Long lock-in contracts for teenagers are a red flag — confidence in a program shows up as flexibility, not fine print.
7. "Can I talk to other parents?"
Reviews, word of mouth at the club, the sideline at Saturday sport. North Brisbane is a village — if a program is good, other parents will tell you. If it's churning kids through, that gets around too. A program that's proud of its results will happily point you at families to ask.
The gym matters far less than the coaching. Squat racks are everywhere — adults who are genuinely good at coaching teenagers are rare.
What about just getting them a normal gym membership?
It's cheaper, and for a self-motivated 17-year-old with training experience, it can work. But for most teens — especially beginners — it usually goes the same way: a few keen weeks copying exercises from their phone, some plateau and boredom, then quietly stopping by month two. No technique foundation, no progression, no one noticing when they stop coming.
What you're really paying for in a proper teen program isn't equipment. It's coaching, structure, and an environment where showing up is the easy part.
